What Do Auto Insurance Policies Cover?
Depending on the policy you choose, your coverages will vary. Here are some of the most popular coverages:
- Collision insurance—This portion of your policy helps cover damage costs if you are involved in a collision.
- Liability insurance—If you are at fault in a wreck, this type of coverage helps insure you against any damage you cause others. Most states, including Ohio, require drivers to carry minimum amounts of liability insurance. There are two kinds of coverage included in liability insurance:
- Property damage liability—This coverage helps pay for damage to the other driver’s property (e.g., their car).
- Bodily injury liability—This coverage helps pay for medical bills and sometimes death benefits for the other person involved in the wreck.
- Medical payments (MedPay) insurance—This portion of your policy helps you pay for the medical bills of you and your passengers if you are involved in an accident.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance—This type of coverage helps you cover the cost of damages caused by someone who doesn’t have adequate auto insurance, specifically liability coverage.
- Comprehensive insurance—This portion of your policy covers damages that are not related to a wreck, such as theft, weather damage or vandalism.
- Towing or roadside assistance— for the cost of towing, tire changing, a dead battery, and similar roadside repairs. This feature includes road service for breakdowns.
- Rental Reimbursement— to cover the cost of renting a vehicle while yours is in the shop after an accident.
- Accident Forgiveness— Under Accident Forgiveness, if you’re involved in an accident, your rates won’t increase – even if the accident is your fault. This applies only one time per policy, and once it’s been used, you’ll be eligible to receive it again three years late
- Minor Violation Forgiveness— With Minor Violation Forgiveness, if you receive a minor traffic citation, you’ll be prepared with the assurance that your rates won’t increase. Like Accident Forgiveness, this applies only once per policy, and the coverage renews after three years of the most recent minor violation.
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP)— With Personal Injury Coverage from Insurance Associates, you’ll have a policy that helps pay for the treatment of you and your family members should someone get injured as a passenger or pedestrian. PIP extends to cover expenses beyond medical bills, such as loss of wages or services, and in some cases, funeral costs. Personal Injury also can extend to take care of your passengers’ bills.
- Mexican Auto Insurance— The Mexican government requires a minimum of liability coverage for all vehicles driven from the United States into Mexico, and the same rules apply to those rented in Mexico.
