Many people visit the doctor even when they don’t need a doctor’s expertise to diagnose and treat their symptoms. The next time you or someone in your family has a cold or experiences flu-like symptoms (e.g., sore throat, runny nose, cough, dizziness, fever or muscle aches), it may be wise to try some home remedies before visiting the doctor. Home Remedies 

Before you go to the doctor, try these home remedies:

  • Take aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve symptoms such as a headache, muscle aches and fever. Follow the instructions on the packaging to ensure an adequate dosage. 

  • Get plenty of rest. 

  • Drink lots of fluids. 

  • Use a humidifier or take a hot shower to relieve a headache, cough or congestion. 

  • Place a warm washcloth over your eyes to ease sinus pressure and congestion. 

When to Call the Doctor 

Call your doctor if these symptoms occur:

  • A sore or swollen throat that lasts more than 48 hours 

  • Chest pain when breathing 

  • Yellow or green nasal discharge that is accompanied by facial pain or a relentless headache 

  • A painful cough that produces thick, bloody or green mucus 

  • Severe or persistent ear pain or ear discharge 

  • A fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher after the third day of being ill 

  • Persistent pain in your abdomen or rectum 

  • Bloody or black stool or vomit  

Preventing the Common Cold and Flu 

There are many healthy habits you can practice to prevent the common cold and flu. This includes washing your hands often with soap and water, getting at least seven hours of sleep each night, eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly.
